Infusing Technology: How can technology be used most effectively to support and assess studentlearning?
Many times when teachers say they're using technology in the classroom, they are! However--most of the technology being used is done by the teacher--i.e. showing a powerpoint or using the projector in the classroom to show a video.
It is challenging to overcome this mindset and focus our thinking on how we have our students use technology and what learning about technology, media use, and information literacy we are aiming for in our instruction.That is why your work with this unit plan and presenting it to your building is SO important.
That brings me to the next topic: What should your presentation focus on? I apologize if I haven't been clear about this, but your presentation should showcase the technologies that your students will be using throughout your unit. Please create your unit plan as if there are no limitations! Try not to focus on your limited time in the lab with your students, but rather, what your students could do in at atmosphere where technology was readily available.
Maybe this will help. Here is a summary of what I presented to my class:
Introduced my unit of instruction--main topic, enduring understandings and essential questions.
My "hook"--how I would get the students "hooked" on the topic--I used a powerpoint.
The standards being addressed--content AND technology.
The table I created to help students evaluate websites during their initial search.
The read aloud book used and how students will use a blog to post their thoughts.
Demonstrated the map site that could be used for assessment.
Glacier experiment: students will create a multimedia presentation to share their findings.
